What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag: A Guide for First-Time Parents

2/5/2025

Preparing for the arrival of your baby is an exciting yet nerve-wracking time, especially for first-time parents. One of the most important tasks to tick off your to-do list is packing your hospital bag. A well-thought-out bag ensures that you’re ready for whatever your labour and delivery experience brings, giving you one less thing to worry about on the big day.
If you’ve attended birthing classes in Eastbourne or participated in a birthing class or first-time parents’ course in Eastbourne, you’ve likely received advice on what to pack. But if you’re still unsure, this comprehensive checklist will help.

For Mum
Your comfort and needs during labour and recovery should be prioritised. Here are the essentials:
  • Comfortable Clothing: Loose-fitting clothes for labour, such as a nightdress or oversized T-shirt. Consider a robe and slippers for comfort during your stay.
  • Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, deodorant, lip balm, shampoo, conditioner, hairbands and any skincare essentials.
  • Maternity Pads: Post-birth bleeding can be heavy, so bring plenty of these.
  • Nursing Bras and Pads: If you’re planning to breastfeed, pack a couple of nursing bras and some breast pads.
  • Snacks and Drinks: Labour can be long, so pack some high-energy snacks and drinks to keep you going.
  • Comfort Items: Items like a pillow from home, a stress ball, or a favourite blanket can help you feel more at ease.
  • Swimwear: if you wish to be in the birthing pool at any stage.

For Baby
Your newborn will need a few essentials during their first few days. Be sure to include:
  • Clothing: Pack at least three sets of baby clothes, including vests, sleepsuits, and a hat.
  • Blankets: A soft blanket for wrapping your baby.
  • Nappies: Bring newborn-sized nappies and cotton wool pads.
  • Car Seat: You’ll need a properly installed car seat to take your baby home safely
.
For Your Partner
Partners play an important role during labour and delivery, and their comfort is also important. Here are a few things to pack for them:
  • Snacks and Drinks: Labour can be exhausting for partners too, so pack enough to keep them energised.
  • Swimwear: if they want to get in the birthing pool too.
  • Comfortable Clothes: Labour can take hours, so your partner should dress comfortably and bring layers.
  • Entertainment: A book, headphones, or something to keep them occupied during downtime.
  • A pillow: The hospital won’t provide one for partners.
  • Toiletries: If they are staying too.

Optional Extras
While not essential, these items can be helpful during your hospital stay:
  • TENS Machine: If you’re planning to use one for pain relief, make sure it’s packed and ready.
  • Aromatherapy oils
  • Phone Chargers: Capture those precious first moments and stay connected with family.

Prepare in Advance
Attending antenatal classes in Eastbourne or enrolling in a first-time parent’s course in Eastbourne, is an excellent way to get personalised advice about your hospital bag.
Our classes often highlight items you might not think about, such as cash for vending machines or a cooling spray for labour.
Packing your hospital bag early, around 34-36 weeks of pregnancy, ensures you’re ready in case your baby decides to arrive ahead of schedule. Keep your bag in an easily accessible spot, and make sure your partner knows where it is too!
By preparing thoughtfully, you’ll feel more confident and ready to embrace the incredible journey of parenthood.
Happy packing!
