What do our antenatal classes cover?

Our antenatal course provides a comprehensive overview of labour, birth, and early parenthood, ensuring you feel informed and prepared every step of the way.

Labour and Pain Management
We’ll guide you through breathing techniques, using a TENS machine, aromatherapy, hypnobirthing, and massage to manage discomfort. You’ll also learn about mobilising, eating, drinking, and over-the-counter pain relief to help you stay comfortable at home before heading to the hospital. Discover what contractions feel like and when it’s time to go in.

Pain Relief Options
From natural methods like water births to Entonox, Pethidine, and epidurals, we’ll explain all available pain relief options so you can make informed decisions about your labour.

Understanding Labour
We break down the three stages of labour in detail, covering complications such as meconium, breaking waters, oxytocin drips, continuous fetal monitoring, and fetal blood sampling. Learn about the reasons for labour induction, assisted births, and caesarean sections so you’re prepared for any eventuality.

After Delivery
We’ll discuss what to expect immediately after delivery, from transferring to the postnatal ward and recovery to going home. Learn about feeding options (breast and bottle), managing blood loss, and recovering from birth, including pelvic floor exercises.

Caring for Your Baby
Practical topics include bathing your baby, nappy changing, and recognising signs of postnatal depression or baby blues. We’ll also cover the support you can expect from midwives and health visitors in those early days.
Our course is packed with essential information to help you feel confident as you welcome your little one into the world.

My partner and I were really looking forward to starting the Birthing & Beyond course after being recommended by a friend as quite frankly, we had no idea what to expect about having a baby! Learning the ins and outs of labour was most helpful because they provided us with lots of information that I had no idea about. The session that spoke about c sections was particularly helpful to me after having to have an emergency c section, it meant I was able to go into it with some idea of what to expect. Lorna was absolutely fantastic and it was so nice meeting a lovely group of new mums and dads. I now have a support group of other mums going through the same as me. Also, the homemade cake they provided weekly never disappointed! Thank you so much.

Brilliant Course!
There's so much to think about when your a 1st time mum to be, labour is not always what you expect or hope 🙃
Having knowledge of all eventualities really helped me to stay calm throughout my labour, I can't thank my tutor enough (as she also by chance delivered my baby!)
Plus you meet a bunch of new friends all with newborns to help you get out the house when you just need a coffee and a chat.
Always a good piece of cake 🍰 on offer at each class too 😋

Really glad I took these classes - despite missing the last few due to having my baby early! I was so glad to have an arsenal of pain relief/comfort techniques ready when I went I to labour and my partner stayed so calm throughout, even when I was shouting that I'd changed my mind and wanted an epidural, he reminded me that I was just hitting the wall as Lorna had described 😆 Also grateful that Lorna talked about the 4th Trimester which, I discovered, is very, very real!
